Hi, I’m Eliza Sterling, and I’m so glad you found your way to Tome Realm. Consider this your open invitation to pull up a chair, set down your bag, and take a deep breath of bookshop air. If you have ever wandered a library aisle feeling overwhelmed, or stared at your nightstand stack thinking, “I should be reading, but my brain is doing cartwheels”, you are in the right place.
I’m based in Portland, Oregon, in a cozy, sunlit apartment with two rescue cats, Brontë and Yotam, who treat every hardcover like an obstacle course. My own “To Be Read” pile is perpetually precarious, which feels like the most honest kind of literary personality test.
One note on the “about me” specifics: this page is written from my personal experience. If you are reading this as part of a brand, author bio, or team site, please treat details like location, pets, and work history as customizable placeholders unless you have verified them.
How I became a reader
I grew up in a house where overflowing bookshelves practically served as load-bearing walls. The kind of home where you learn early that stories are not just entertainment, they are a way of being in the world. I studied English literature (which gave me a sturdy love for the classics and a lifelong habit of underlining lines that make my heart do that little flip), and then I spent years managing an independent bookstore.
Bookstore life teaches you what people actually want to read, not what they think they are “supposed” to read. You see, up close, how different genres comfort people in different ways. You witness the small relief of the right recommendation at the right time. You also learn to respect the reader who is buying a romance, a memoir, and a cookbook in the same visit, because that reader is building a life, not a syllabus.
These days I also work as a freelance editor, which means I’m endlessly charmed by the behind-the-scenes craft of storytelling: the rhythm of a sentence, the precision of a scene change, the way a single sensory detail can make a character feel real.
What Tome Realm is for
Tome Realm exists because I believe reading should not be gated by snobbery. A gorgeous art book can be as transporting as a prizewinning novel. A well-crafted cookbook can hold as much narrative pleasure as a sweeping historical epic. A graphic novel can deliver emotional resonance that lingers long after you close the cover. Reading is reading, and if a book makes you feel more awake to your own life, it counts.
Here, you can expect:
- Warm, honest recommendations across modern fiction, classics, memoir, graphic novels, art books, and cookbooks.
- Reading-slump rescue for when your attention span is frayed, your calendar is too full, or you cannot find the spark (think: short chapters, propulsive plots, and gentle re-entry reads).
- Vibe-forward guidance that focuses on how a book feels, not how it performs on an imaginary test.
- Tactile book love, from cover design and paper texture to the small joy of a well-placed bookmark.
My taste
Eclectic in the most enthusiastic way. I’m just as likely to disappear into 19th-century diaries and memoirs as I am to binge a vibrant modern graphic novel, or spend an entire afternoon lingering over a beautifully photographed art book. I love stories that make ordinary life feel luminous, and I have a particular soft spot for books that pay attention to sensory detail, food history, and visual culture.
If you want a few touchstones, here are some authors and creators I return to: Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, Elena Ferrante, Maggie Nelson, Alison Bechdel, and M.F.K. Fisher.
A few example titles that capture the range around here (and the kinds of conversations I like to have):
- Fiction: Beloved by Toni Morrison
- Classic: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
- Memoir: The Argonauts by Maggie Nelson
- Graphic memoir: Fun Home by Alison Bechdel
- Food writing: The Art of Eating by M.F.K. Fisher
When I’m not reading, I’m usually testing recipes from vintage cookbooks or hunting for hidden gems at thrift shops. Those hobbies are not separate from books, at least not for me. A stained recipe card, a well-worn spiral binding, a penciled note in the margin, those are stories too.
How I recommend
I write the way I used to talk to customers at the bookstore: like a knowledgeable friend, probably with a cup of Earl Grey nearby, and absolutely not trying to impress anyone with academic jargon. My guiding questions are simple:
- What kind of mood does this book create?
- Who is it perfect for, and who might want to skip it?
- What will you carry with you after the last page?
Sometimes that means I will champion a quiet, tender novel that feels like a steadying hand. Other times I will nudge you toward something bold and strange, the kind of book that clears your head.
A quick note on trust: I only recommend books I’ve read (or have spent real time with, in the case of art books and cookbooks), and I’ll always tell you if a copy was provided to me. If I use affiliate links or accept sponsorships, I will disclose that clearly, too. Tome Realm is here for readers first.
Start here
If you are new here, welcome. If you have been around for a while, welcome back. Either way, I hope Tome Realm feels like a place you can return to whenever you need a little direction, a little comfort, or a nudge toward a story you would not have found on your own.
If you ever feel stuck, start with this: tell me what you loved last, and why. The “why” is where the good clues live.
- Browse: start with the latest recommendations.
- Quick wins: try a reading-slump reset (short, propulsive, and easy to re-enter).
- Ask: send me a note with three books you’ve loved and one mood you’re craving, and I’ll point you toward a few options.
